The hospital is one of the major hospitals in Latvia

The neurosurgical ward has 50 beds for patients, including 4 rooms with a higher level of comfort and a modern intensive care, providing ongoing monitoring and treatment of postoperative patients.

In the “Gaiļezers” hospital, there are two operating theatres with modern equipment for operating neurosurgical patients (intraoperative ultrasound, neuronavigation, 2 operating microscopes, endoscopic equipment), which is used to perform more than 1,000 operations with varying levels of difficulty.

The neurosurgical department is the basis for the education of students and doctors in Riga.

2. Patient’s medical history

  • A 25-year-old man suffering from craniocerebral trauma as a result of a traffic accident.
  • 26/08/2012 – decompressive skull trepanation, removing of subdural hematoma, which was created as a result of the injury.
  • 08/05/2014 – the attending neurosurgeon Kaspars Auslands Head of Latvian Association of Neurosurgeons http://www.neirokirurgija.lv/ directed the patient to a diagnostic radiology centre where necessary tests were made to produce a Codubix 3D skull bone prosthesis.

3. Operation course

  • The operation was performed on 12/06/2014 by neurosurgeon: Kaspars Auslands.
  • The operation lasted for about 2.5 hours.

4. After the operation

  • The doctor rated the patient’s condition as stable. On 17/06/2014 the patient was discharged from the hospital.
  • Both the doctor and the patient are satisfied with the medical and cosmetic result of the operation.
  • In the near future the patient will be evaluated in outpatient setting.
  • The doctor’s opinion: the patient and the cosmetic result will be evaluated after 6 months.
