Report: Implantation of Codubix® CT cranial prosthesis 3 July 2017 – Latvia

The neurosurgical ward has 50 beds for patients, including 4 rooms with a higher level of comfort and a modern intensive care, providing ongoing monitoring and treatment of postoperative patients.

In the “Gaiļezers” hospital, there are two operating theatres with modern equipment for operating neurosurgical patients (intraoperative ultrasound, neuronavigation, 2 operating microscopes, endoscopic equipment), which is used to perform more than 1,000 operations with varying levels of difficulty.

The neurosurgical department is the basis for the education of students and doctors in Riga.

2. Patient’s medical history / Post-surgery activities

Patient: R. Sz. (40 years), with a head injury suffered as a result of a heavy object hitting his head on 24 November 2014. The injury caused the occurrence of a large subdural haematoma. A decompressive craniectomy procedure was performed to evacuate the post-injury subdural haematoma.

In April 2016, the patient underwent an operation in which the missing parts of his skull were replaced with his own cranial bones, but the body rejected the transplant.

The doctor in charge of the patient, Dr Kaspars Auslands, told the patient’s family that the patient could have a CODUBIX prosthesis implanted. The doctor then asked TZMO Latvija to prepare such a prosthesis specifically for that patient. The patient was sent to a diagnostic radiology centre for the tests that were necessary to prepare the Codubix CT cranial prosthesis for him.

3. The operation

  • The operation was performed on 19 June 2017 by Dr Kaspars Auslands, a neurosurgeon.
  • The operation took about four hours.
  • The prosthesis had been made with great precision.

5. After the operation

  • The doctor assessed the patient’s condition to be stable.
  • On 30 June 2017, the patient was discharged from hospital. The surgery was followed by a period of rehabilitation in the patient’s home.
  • Both the doctor and the patient are satisfied with the aesthetic outcome after the operation.
  • The patient suffered no post-surgery complications.
